Second, scaling up is possible due to the organisation’s number of activities, which have increased dramatically over the last several years. In 2010, the festival ran its first annual screenings in Yarraville 9 at the Sun Theatre, an event sponsored by the Maribyrnong City Council. The festival also has its annual screenings in Bendigo. 10 Up until 2013, MQFF hosted several screenings for Midsumma in the Fairfield amphitheatre. 11 Usually, the films are the highlights from the previous year’s programme; however, in 2012, the film D.E.B.S. (Angela Robinson 2004) was included. This extends MQFF’s activities beyond the strict festival period. For panel selection member Mark Pace, this notion of the travelling film festival is a significant aspect to the organisation’s social empowering possibilities as there is an acknowledgement to the decentralised and scattered nature of Melbourne’s (and Victoria’s) queer community:I think number one, it gives people an opportunity to see themselves in cinema, which I think is really important for young people, but also rural queer people as well. I think a great part of the festival is that it goes to rural parts of the community (Interview with Mark Pace 2011).
